Why Do We Light Incense in Buddhism?
Incense (or joss sticks) is not just a spiritual ritual, but it also carries a deep symbolic meaning.
- When we speak of incense, we are referring to fragrance.
- However, the fragrance here is not a material scent, but symbolizes the virtues of a person.
- Buddhism uses physical incense to remind us of the fragrance of virtue.
A person with virtue, humility, compassion, and wisdom, their fragrance spreads everywhere, just like the verse in the Dhammapada:
“The fragrance of all flowers cannot blow against the wind.
Only the fragrance of a virtuous person can travel against the wind in all directions.”
The fragrance of virtue does not depend on circumstances, but rather spreads and shines no matter where they are.
The Meaning of Three Sticks of Incense: Morality – Concentration – Wisdom
In Buddhism, lighting three sticks of incense symbolizes Morality – Concentration – Wisdom:
- Morality (Sīla) – Keeping ethics and refraining from evil actions.
- Concentration (Samādhi) – Training the mind to be calm and undisturbed.
- Wisdom (Paññā) – Developing wisdom, understanding the true nature of life.
In life, anything that lacks Morality – Concentration – Wisdom is likely to fail.
- Without Morality: One may easily commit wrongdoings and act unethically.
- Without Concentration: The mind becomes unstable and lacks perseverance.
- Without Wisdom: One cannot discern right from wrong, and may be easily misled.
Therefore, lighting three sticks of incense is not just a ritual, but also a reminder to cultivate the three core elements of the path of practice.
